NOMA Louisiana is determined to make an impact in Louisiana’s communities by addressing intransigent issues in the public forum. CharetteNOLA is a BIG ideas competition developed to engage the community in the push for social justice through the design process. Teams of 4 to 5 people (totaling between 50-100 people) will collaborate in an engaging organized weekend work sessions to design inspired solutions to challenging social issues.

Solve for big social issues.

We want to solve for big complicated social issues in order to provide comprehensive access to the functional necessities of the built environment to underserved communities in New Orleans through a community wide collaborative design Charette series that attempts produce an array of social empathetic innovations, ideas, designs and prototypes.

Expand the reach of the design process.

We want to expand the reach of the design process in order to bring community members a means for advocating social and neighborhood change. By connecting members of the community, community advocates, neighborhood partners, non-profits, Designers, artists, and civic leaders through collaborative design Charettes we can more effectively respond to the big social issues and that affect our community.

Work with nonprofits on social + education agendas.

Working with non-profits on social and education agendas will provide the data and expertise necessary to effectively run CharetteNOLA. Partnering with innovative nonprofits dedicated to social advocacy and social change will allow us to accelerate the rate of change and better define the root problem statement, pain point or intransigent social issue.

Develop good ideas and innovations.

CharetteNOLA will allow teams of creative and innovative minds alike to actively engage complex issues and develop empathetic solutions to the challenges facing our communities. During the CharetteNOLA process, teams will have the opportunity to explore a multitude of possibilities for a specific social challenge through a process of designing the core intention of the idea; the delivery mechanism for that idea; the Physical, metaphysical, or virtual space for which the Idea lives; and last but not least, designing the collective use of the aforementioned (instruction manual).

Create local and national dialogue through parallel design competition

As a means of expanding exposure and creating a dialogue outside the walls of New Orleans, CharetteNOLA will run a parallel national design competition that holds to the same parameters as our local Charette and produces an expanded pool of proposed design solutions. CharetteNOLA is an extensive program designed to open discourse and challenge the public to think about the social impact of design in our world.
